Why choose an Independent Midwife?

We are incredibly fortunate in the UK to have a functioning National Health Service, providing free healthcare at the point of access — including maternity care. However, in recent years, it has become increasingly clear that for many women and babies, this care is no longer adequate. In some cases, it is even actively harmful.
With caesarean section rates approaching 50% in most areas, and physiological birth all but disappearing in others, it is no surprise that more and more women are emerging from NHS maternity care with trauma. This is not a criticism of individual professionals — many are doing their utmost within a system that simply no longer puts women and babies at the centre. In such an environment, offering truly personalised, gold-standard care becomes impossible.
Many of the women who choose to book their care with me do so because they have already experienced this system first-hand. They know their next experience has to be different. They understand that investing in their birth — and in themselves — is not a luxury, but a necessity for healing and for the long journey of motherhood that follows.
What the Research Shows
Decades of national and international research clearly demonstrate that continuity of midwifery care — being supported by the same person throughout pregnancy, birth, and the postnatal period — improves almost every measurable outcome for mothers and babies.
Investing in the care of an Independent Midwife dramatically increases your chances of:
Achieving the birth you hope for
Reducing complications for you and your baby
Feeling empowered, supported, and safe throughout your journey
And if complications do arise, I have extensive training and experience to manage them safely and appropriately.
Since entering independent practice, 95% of the births I’ve attended have been uncomplicated vaginal births — almost all at home (with one hospital birth by the woman’s choice). Very few of these women would have been classed as “low risk” in an NHS setting. Their births have included:
“Big” babies
Pregnancies beyond 42 weeks
Three sets of twins
And many other scenarios that often lead to unnecessary intervention in standard care
““Thank you from the bottom of my heart for a birth experience I didn’t think was possible for me. One people only dream about. I can hear your voice in my head now saying “It was all you!”, but I believe that is far from the truth. Your presence, voice and words brought me so much calmness.” ”
““It’s hard to put into words how much meeting you transformed my pregnancy and birth. From our first meeting I felt supported, validated, cared for and guided to achieve the birth I so longed for. I know you went above and beyond to make my birth experience as special as it could be. The birthing pool, your motivational chats, the smiles and fangirling and overall positivity you exuded will stay with me forever, and I look back and think I had such an amazing birth, because of all you did. You are an incredibly special person, I feel so blessed that our worlds collided.” ”
““the whole experience went beyond my wildest imagination of how empowering and magical birth could be...””
Birth as transformation
Birth is not just a medical event. It is a rite of passage — a moment that shapes your identity as a mother and your baby’s entry into the world.
Investing in an Independent Midwife gives you the greatest chance of making this a truly transformative, empowering, and life-changing experience.
