This FAQ section covers some of the most common questions I hear from families

Offering clear, honest answers to help you feel informed, supported, and confident as you explore your options.

  • Yes. You are entitled to receive as much or as little NHS care as you wish, alongside care with me.

I recommend having a booking appointment with your chosen NHS Trust, as this can be helpful should NHS support be needed at any point during your pregnancy or birth. Having blood test results and other investigations recorded on your NHS notes also supports safe information sharing if required.

Most of my clients choose to have their booking appointment, routine blood tests, and ultrasound scans with the NHS, and then receive the remainder of their antenatal, birth, and postnatal care with me. This approach allows you to benefit from NHS resources while maintaining continuity of care and personalised support throughout your pregnancy.

  • If you are identified as higher risk, or if a risk factor develops during your pregnancy, we will fully discuss what this means for you and your baby, ensuring you have clear, evidence-based information and time to explore all your options.

If you choose, we can work collaboratively with an obstetrician or other relevant specialist. I can accompany you to appointments, help you prepare questions, and offer ongoing support so that your care remains joined-up and centred around your preferences.

I will continue to support your informed choices, including your choice of place of birth, even if risk factors arise. We will work together to reduce risk wherever possible, adapt your care plan as needed, and ensure that decisions are made thoughtfully, collaboratively, and in line with what feels right for you.

  • Emergencies requiring immediate transfer to hospital are rare in healthy, physiological labour.

Large UK studies examining outcomes by planned place of birth have shown that, for women with low-risk pregnancies, home birth is a safe option for most mothers and babies. Planned home birth is associated with significantly higher rates of vaginal birth, and lower rates of intervention, including postpartum haemorrhage, unplanned caesarean section, instrumental birth, episiotomy, and epidural use, as well as higher maternal satisfaction.

Early findings from the Birthplace in England study suggested a slightly higher risk for babies of first-time mothers planning home birth. However, subsequent analysis and reviews of high-quality studies have found no statistically significant difference in infant mortality between planned home and hospital birth for low-risk women, including those having their first baby.

As an experienced home birth midwife, also with extensive hospital experience, I am trained and equipped to recognise and manage complications should they arise.

In practice, true emergencies are uncommon, and there are usually early signs when labour is deviating from the normal, allowing timely decision-making and transfer to hospital if needed.

My role is to monitor you and your baby closely, act early if concerns arise, and ensure that transfer is calm, organised, and appropriate whenever it is in your or your baby’s best interests.

If we do require a transfer to hospital, an ambulance is called to take us to your nearest NHS maternity unit. I handover clinical care to the NHS team but remain with you until your baby is born.

  • This has not happened to date. It would only be in very exceptional circumstances that I would be unable to attend your birth.

I always endeavour for you to meet the second midwife who would normally attend your birth with me in advance, so that you are familiar with your care team. In the extremely unlikely event that I am unable to attend, the second midwife would step into the role of lead midwife, ensuring that you are supported by someone you already know and trust.

  • No! While the majority of my clients do choose to give birth at home, this doesn’t need to be decided at the point of booking. Some people know from the outset, others decide during pregnancy, and some only decide where they feel most comfortable once labour has begun.

  • Yes. You may be planning a hospital birth from the outset, or you may make an informed decision to birth in hospital if a complication arises.

In this situation, my role is that of a professional birth partner. I provide continuous emotional support, help you communicate your wishes, and act as an advocate who knows you and your preferences well, while supporting you to navigate what can sometimes feel like a stressful or unfamiliar hospital environment.

Although I am unable to provide direct clinical care within NHS Trusts, I offer experienced guidance, calm reassurance, and continuity of support, helping you to feel informed, supported, and confident throughout your labour and birth.

  • Please get in touch. While I’m unable to significantly reduce my fees, we may be able to tailor a package that better suits your individual needs. I’m always happy to discuss options and help you find an arrangement that feels appropriate and supportive for you

  • In some cases medical insurance will cover some or all of your care, you would need to check this with your individual provider. You may pay for your care in one instalment or multiple, and I do accept credit card payments.

  • Absolutely not, I’d love to hear from you! I’ve chatted with many clients long before they’re pregnant, and honestly, it’s one of my favourite parts of the job.

Starting our partnership early means we can dream, plan, and get to know each other before baby is even created! No pressure, just a friendly conversation to see if we’re a good fit, and start getting excited about what’s to come!

  • That’s absolutely fine. I offer a free initial video call where we can talk through your hopes for this pregnancy and birth, and see whether working together feels like a good fit.

If you’d like more time to explore your options, you can also book a one-off consultation. If you later decide to book a full package, the cost of this consultation will be deducted from your package fee.

There’s no obligation at any stage — the aim is simply to help you make the choice that feels right for you.
